Quetzaltenango is a department of the Republic of Guatemala, located in the western region of the country. It has an area of 1951 square kilometers and its population is about 735,162 people, according to the National Survey of Living Conditions (2006). It has 24 municipalities and provincial capital is the city of Quetzaltenango (Guatemala Municipal Dictionary, 2001).

Quetzaltenango limits the north with the department of Huehuetenango, the east with the departments of Totonicapan and Solola, south with the departments of Retalhuleu and Suchitepequez and to the west with the department of San Marcos. Its main languages are Castilian, Mam and K'iche '. His usual temperature is cold to warm and its celebration is from 9 to 17 September, to celebrate the independence of the country. It was founded on September 16, 1845
