The segond most important city in Guatemala due to its size, industrial cultural and commercial activities, is also known as Xela or Xelajú,

Quetzaltenango is casted by a special spell, its streets, residences and building are testimony of the magic in the city of the silver moon. Xela is also known as Centro América's cradle of culture, offering a unique cultural and historical richness. In the other hand it also combines the characteristics of a modern city, without the feeling of being in a tourism metropolis.

 

Quetzaltenango is located only four hours away from the Mexican border, as well as from Guatemala city. It is situated in the western highlands at 2,333 meters above sea level, Xela and its surroundings offer beautiful landscapes, mountainous views, important peaks and warm and cold climate.

Xela's most important tourism attractions are organized into four categories: discovery routes volcanoes, natural trails and thermal waters. The city is surrounded by several villages and interest sites where you can observe more than 700 bird species, among other things.

It's populations originated from the Quiché and Mam ethinic gropus, host small plazas with stunning colonial churches, where tourists will appreciate its agricultural and artisan richness. The most important crops from the region are: coffee, corn, fruits, African palm, sesame, rice and rubber. Quetzaltenango is also an industrial, commercial and livestock farming area.

One of its main festivities is the towns official celebration, that takes place on September 15 th in memory of the independence day of Guatemala. This event is full of religious manifestations, dances, local gastronomy and the most important ingredient: happiness and fervor. This celebration takes place most part of the month.
